Is Character AI down right now? The 30-second check
The fastest honest check, in order, because the official channel is a dead end:
- Open r/CharacterAI sorted by new. With a community this size, a real outage floods the front page in minutes. No flood, probably no outage.
- Check Downdetector’s Character AI page. During the June 15, 2026 incident it collected over 3,000 reports before noon Pacific; it is the closest thing to a live meter the public has.
- Scan the official X account for an incident post, and know that silence there proves nothing; the company communicates outages inconsistently.
- Do not bother with the status page. That is not a joke, and it is the story of the next section.
If the site loads but your chats will not, jump to the error table below, and if you are under 18, to the section after it: since November 2025 there is a category of “down” that is policy, not servers.
”Houston, we have a problem”: the status page you cannot read
Character.AI runs an official status page at status.character.ai, and it greets the public with a lock: “This page is currently inactive and can only be viewed by team members.” Its public API returns 401. The monitoring exists; you are not allowed to see it.
The record that leaks around the lock is telling. Third-party mirrors that used to read the page show it once tracked five components (site, Characters, Chats, Search, Voices), and one tracker logged more than 568 outage events since March 2025, with real incident titles like “Investigating an issue”. Those mirrors stopped receiving fresh incident data in mid-June 2026, which is why every “is it down” checker you will find is now guessing. For a platform this size, that is a remarkable transparency gap, and it is the whole reason a page like this one has to exist.
The June 15, 2026 outage, and what the record shows
The sharpest recent incident is fully dated: on June 15, 2026, Downdetector passed 3,000 user reports by 11:44 a.m. Pacific, mostly from the mobile app; the official status checker briefly displayed “We are currently investigating this issue”; independent monitoring recorded a 503 window of about four minutes that evening, and same-day tracker captures logged several short windows between 4 and 45 minutes. Service recovered the same day.
That is the shape of Character.AI outages in the recent record: minutes to under an hour, app-heavy, same-day recovery. A claimed global outage two days later on June 17 exists only as a search-trend spike with no official statement, which is exactly the kind of rumor a locked status page breeds.

Error messages decoded
Character.AI’s failure screens, as documented across user reports (the official help center blocks automated reading, so these are community-attributed, not first-party definitions):
| What you see | What it usually means | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| ”Network Error” mid-chat | A generation failure, not your Wi-Fi | Retry the message; switch app to web or the reverse |
| ”Failed to Fetch” | The client lost the server briefly | Refresh; check the subreddit if it persists |
| ”There was an error generating a response” | The model layer choked on one reply | Regenerate; try a different character to isolate it |
| Login loop or endless spinner | Session or auth hiccup, common on outage days | Log out fully, clear the app cache, retry |
| Site loads, chat refuses, you are under 18 | Policy, not an outage | See the next section |
Is Character AI shutting down?
No, and the rumor deserves a dated answer because the question is searched every day. What feeds it: on August 2, 2024, Google paid a reported $2.7 billion for a non-exclusive license and hired the founders and about thirty engineers into DeepMind, leaving Character.AI independent but visibly hollowed; in August 2025, reporting said the company was talking to bankers about a possible sale while raising money against punishing infrastructure costs, and no sale has since been announced; and on October 29, 2025 the company announced the end of open-ended chat for under-18 users, executed in the US on November 24, 2025, which for millions of younger users genuinely was the product ending.
The counterweight is the shipping record: the official blog pushed net-new features as recently as July 24, 2026, including Lorebook, serialized “c.ai series” microdramas, and memory upgrades. Companies that are closing do not ship. What the record supports is narrower and more useful: the original team is gone, costs are heavy, the audience under 18 lost the core product, and the platform keeps operating. If you searched “shutting down” because your own access ended, the next section is probably your answer.

Down for you: the under-18 cutoff
Since November 24, 2025 in the US, Character.AI no longer offers open-ended chat to users under 18, per the October 29 announcement, and age checks decide who that applies to. If you are in that group, the site loads, the characters render, and the conversation you came for does not start. Nothing is broken and nothing will un-break; that is the product now. Adults misflagged by age assurance have an appeals path through support, which is its own kind of queue.
What to use while it waits (or after it walled you)
For a short outage, the honest advice is patience; the record says minutes, not days. If the platform’s direction rather than its uptime is what pushed you here, my Character AI alternatives page ranks the exits by what you actually miss, filter freedom included, and it is written from the same dated-evidence standard as this page. For a paid escape with tested evidence behind it: Candy AI was the strongest texting of my test cycle, no queues and no age wall for adults, and the finder quiz matches you to a fit in ten questions.
